Members of the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MUP) in the town of Subotica have arrested S.F. (62), a citizen of Tunisia, and T.M. (28), a citizen of Turkey.

They are suspected of committing the crimes of illegal crossing of the state border, and of people smuggling.

The police found eight irregular migrants in the vehicles driven by the suspects when they stopped them at a checkpoint in Subotica, northern Serbia.

It is believed that the suspects intended to, in exchange for money, transport the migrants to the border with Hungary, which the migrants then intended to illegally cross on foot.

S.F. and T.M. were first detained by the police for up to 48 hours, after which they were brought before the Basic Public Prosecutor's Office in Subotica, along with a criminal complaint.

A preliminary proceedings judge then ordered them to be detained for up to 30 days.
