The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) has received the request of the National Assembly of Serbia for the country to become an associate member of the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly, the Assembly of Serbia announced today.

Serbia signed the document on accession to the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia during the 43rd ASEAN summit last year, according to a statement.

ASEAN is a political, economic and cultural organization of countries located in Southeast Asia.

Since its formation on August 8, 1967 at the initiative of Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand, the organization's membership has expanded to include Brunei, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, and Vietnam.

The most important areas of cooperation within ASEAN and the signatory states of the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation are economic cooperation, education and development of interpersonal contacts, science, technology and innovation, and sustainable development.

Serbia joined this organization with the aim of continuing cooperation with friendly countries in Southeast Asia, which dates back to the period of the Non-Aligned Movement, the Serbian Assembly recalled in its statement today.
