The basketball tournament in France had record-breaking attendance in the history of the Olympic Games, the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) has announced.

According to FIBA, 1,078,319 fans watched men's and women's basketball live, played in Lille and Paris, breaking the record from the Atlanta games in 1996, when this number was 1,068,033.

FIBA points out that the record is even more important bearing in mind that during these Olympics, 40 games less were played in both competitions compared to 92 in Atlanta, because the format of the competition is significantly different.

Previously the Olympic winner had to play at least eight games, and now six.

The average attendance for the matches in Lille and Paris was 20,737 including both competitions, 21,711 for men and 19,763 for women.

The Olympic basketball champions are the US, who beat France in both men's and women's tournaments, while Serbia won the bronze medal after defeating Germany.
