Leader of the Socialist Party of Serbia (SPS) Ivica Dacic has said his party strongly condemns violent demonstrations announced for Saturday and added that they have nothing to do with environmental protection, but aim to take power by force and threaten President of the Republic of Serbia Aleksandar Vucic.

"Protests are organized by those who brought Rio Tinto to Serbia and boasted about that project while they were in power. It has been said a million times that environmental protection is the basic issue on which the realization of this project (Jadar) will depend," Dacic, who is also Serbia's interior minister, said.

He added that the organizers are supported by foreign factors and assessed that their goal was to create chaos, weaken and prevent Serbia from defending its national and state interests, the SPS said in a statement.

"That's why it is the duty of all state-building and patriotic parties to oppose such disastrous policies," said Dacic.
