"The policeman managed to defend the embassy, his own life. We thought that the attacker would survive, that we could learn more. The fact is that this is about Wahhabis," said Minister Ivica Dacic

The body of a terrorist who seriously wounded a Gendarmerie (Serbian police unit) member Milos Jevremovic (34) using a crossbow was this afternoon on the ground near the Israeli embassy, surrounded by a large number of police officers.

Jevremovic used his firearm in self-defense and shot the attacker, who died as a result of his injuries.

"An unknown person repeatedly approached the policeman, asking him questions, for example, for directions to a museum. Then the person returned and took out a crossbow from his bag and shot and wounded the gendarme. There is no doubt that this is a terrorist act, an attack on our country," said Ivica Dacic.

He added that the policeman's life was saved because the arrow was not immediately removed from his neck:

"The policeman managed to defend the embassy, his own life. e thought that the attacker would survive, that we could learn more. The fact is that this is about Wahhabis. In addition to the crossbow, he was also armed with a knife. First of all, we need to establish the exact identity and his connections, what is and if there is there anything related to him as far as terrorism is concerned," the minister said, adding:

"We are now discussing the possible motives, but there is no other motive for someone to attack a Gendarme. Another person was moving close by. I expect that in the next few hours we will have the identity of the person, that things will be clearer. No one in the embassy was in danger at the time of the attack, their security is provided by other units. Otherwise, other countries contacted us to help in the investigation."
