Vucic comments on Serbia ending EURO campaign: "It is a debacle! €5,000 player from Celje scores against us"
The president of Serbia commented on yesterday's draw against Denmark
A goalless draw against Denmark saw the Serbian national football team end its participation in EURO 2024 failing to qualify from the group, disappointing everyone who secretly hoped the squad would make it at least to the round of 16.
Our national team won only two points in the group, losing to England 0-1, and drawing against Slovenia (1-1) and Denmark (0-0).
During his visit to Brussels today, President of Serbia Aleksandar Vucic commented on the performance of our national team, stressing that our people at home deserved better results.
He underlined that huge sums of money have been invested.
"I agree that it is a debacle. It is a sport, everything's a sport, we just gave a lot of money to that sport and invested a lot. People in Serbia deserve better results. It's not a problem to lose to England, which play badly, it's not a problem to lose to Germany, Spain, whoever, but it's a problem when you lose to Slovenia, whose team is worth three times less than the Serbian, when a player who receives a 5,000 euro salary in Celje (a town in Slovenia) scores goals, because there is no one to mark him. There are countless problems there. And what, we are now happy, satisfied, no big deal...
I will not go into that and we are not a banana republic where everything is solved in one day or overnight, with emotional reactions, but I am quite sure that both when it comes to handball and football, especially due to the fact that we invest a lot of money in infrastructure, including in salaries received by the football association (FSS) officials - even though they will tell you that they get it from UEFA - enough of that nonsense and empty stories by the head coach and others. We are investing big money and the citizens of Serbia deserve better results," said Aleksandar Vucic.
