Truck falls off bridge into Danube close to border with Serbia: Vehicle ends up in 16-meter-deep water
The unfortunate driver could not be rescued
A 42 man from Romania was killed in the night between Monday and Tuesday when his truck fell from a bridge into the Danube, after a tire exploded on the vehicle.
The tragedy happened in Mehedinti, not far from the border with Serbia. The victim was on his way home, after transporting a cargo to Bucharest. According to the media, there was no way to rescuue him, because the truck fell into very deep water.
The accident happened on the Orsova-Drobeta Turnu-Severin road a little past midnight.
It is believed that the man, who was a professional driver, was unable to regain control of the vehicle after the tire exploded. He hit a fence and plunged into the Danube, in a place where the river is about 16 meters deep.
A border policeman saw the tragedy from the yard of his house.
"I jumped into the boat and started looking for him. I arrived there as fast as I could. I called my colleagues from the police and the fire department. I heard a loud bang and saw him land in the water. First the trailer splashed, then the cabin. It looked like there was another explosion when the truck hit the water, I also saw flames," the eyewitness said.
The unfortunate driver could not be rescued. After several hours of searching, divers managed to retrieve the body.
The owner of the company the victim worked for did not wish to make any statements for the press.
