A Telegraf reporter took the first photos after the accident that happened this morning near Backa Palanka when the German ship "Antonia" (the reports initially said the ship was Romanian) which was towing the loaded barge "Lola-5" hit a pillar of the 25 Maj bridge that connects the Backa Palanka and Ilok border crossings.
The Ministry of Environmental Protection, together with the Environmental Protection Agency, is monitoring the situation on the Danube River.
"At this moment, inspectors from the competent Provincial (Vojvodina) Secretariat for Agriculture, Forestry and Water Management are choosing five locations where representatives of the Environmental Protection Agency will conduct sampling to determine all physical and chemical parameters in order to analyze water quality, and find out what impact the accident has had on the environment," they said.
The ship hit a bridge pillar located in the Croatian part of the Danube River, which is why the Croatian authorities have been informed.
