Local and early parliamentary elections to be held in Serbia on December 17
According to the law, all deadlines start running from the moment elections are scheduled
Early parliamentary elections and local elections in a number of cities and municipalities have been called for December 17.
Local elections were announced this morning by President of the National Assembly Vladimir Orlic, while early parliamentary elections were announced shortly after by President of Serbia Aleksandar Vucic.
Vucic calls early parliamentary elections
Vucic called early parliamentary elections for December 17, speaking from the Presidency.
"Based on the Government's proposal from October 30, 2023, I issue a decree on the dissolution of the National Assembly of Serbia. This decree enters into force on the day of its publication in the Official Gazette of the Republic of Serbia. I am making a decision to call elections for people's deputies for December 17, 2023," said Vucic.
He added that we live in difficult times and that it is necessary to be united.
"I wish all participants good luck and success in presenting their ideas, and I wish the citizens that the best ones win. I am convinced that with these elections we are strengthening the path to a better future for our country," he added.
Local elections announced for December 17
President of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia Vladimir Orlic announced local elections for December 17.
"In accordance with the law on local elections and local self-government, elections for councilors in 65 cities and municipalities in Serbia have been announced for December 17. This decision shall enter into force upon publication in the Official Gazette. I invite all citizens and political actors to take part in these elections. I have no doubt that the citizens will choose the best ones," said Orlic.
According to the law, all deadlines start running from the moment elections are scheduled.
The campaign will last until December 14 at midnight, when election silence will begin. All voters, citizens of the Republic of Serbia of legal age, will be able to vote at their polling stations on Sunday, December 17, from 7 am until 8 pm.
The previous parliamentary elections were held in Serbia on April 3 of last year.
