A subvariant of the Omicron strain of coronavirus, so-called Eris (Omicron EG.5 Eris), has arrived in Serbia.

According to the Institute of Public Health of Vojvodina, it was confirmed in a sample of biological material using a new generation sequencing method.

"The Center for Virology of the Institute of Public Health of Vojvodina identified the presence of the Omicron variant, subvariant EG.5 (Eris) by analyzing the genome of the SARS-CoV-2 virus using a new generation sequencing method," the Institute stated.

It is added that the subvariant was identified from a sample of biological material that was provided on August 30, 2023, as part of routine monitoring of Covid-19 in the territory of the South Backa District - the Institute said.

We have learned that this subvariant is not yet dominant, and otherwise manifests itself through mild symptoms of Covid.
