Momirovic comments on vandalism in Subotica: "It is an act against security and interests of Serbia"
This is not the first such incident, in July of this year the signs on theBikovac loop, but this time those written in Serbian Cyrillic, were also damaged
The inscriptions "Subotica" in the Hungarian language ("Szabadka") were destroyed in Palic and near the Bikovac loop.
"On behalf of the Government of the Republic of Serbia, I want to condemn this act of vandalism and an act aimed above all against the security and interests of the Republic of Serbia," said Trade Minister Tomislav Momirovic during a tour of the destroyed sign with the word "Subotica" in Hungarian, near the Bikovac loop on the south approach to the city, and after a meeting with the mayor of Subotica, Stevan Bakic.
"This kind of act is completely unacceptable and must not be tolerated. I am sure that all residents of Subotica and all citizens of Serbia will overcome this. I could talk for a really long time about how much Hungary supported Serbia in the previous period when it came to our interests in Kosovo and Metohija or Bosnia and Herzegovina. I could also talk about a large number of investments, the high-speed railway Szeged-Subotica, about the growth of economic ties between our two countries, but that is not even the issue here.
It is about the citizens of the Republic of Serbia, it is about Serbs and Hungarians alike, our common future. We have done a lot in previous years on the inclusion of minorities in our country, and things like this must not cast a shadow on the intentions of the Government of the Republic of Serbia when we talk about the unity of all citizens in the entire territory of our country," said Minister Tomislav Momirovic.
"On this occasion, I strongly condemn this act of vandalism. It is an act by which the perpetrators want to damage the historic relations between Serbs and Hungarians, and I appeal on this occasion to all residents of Subotica not to fall for these provocations," said the mayor of Subotica, Stevan Bakic.
Minister Tomislav Momirovic also held a meeting with Balint Pastor, the president of the Subotica City Assembly.
