12 people injured during supercell storm in Nis: Roofs fly off buildings, trees falling down
The storm also took away parts of a sports dome in the village of Popovac near Nis
12 people were injured in a storm that hit Nis around 10 pm last night, but luckily all of them only had minor wounds, the emergency services said.
According to a doctor at that health facility, citizens who were in public places when the storm started to knock down branches, sheet metal and other things from buildings were the ones injured.
"Patients who came to us for help had hematomas from falls or blows from branches and various other objects, but there were also those who asked for help for surface cuts made by metal sheets. Everyone came to us, there were no interventions on the ground," they said at the emergency department.
The storm caused great material damage - as it did across Serbia - primarily to parked cars, onto which branches or whole trees fell, but roofs and balconies on many buildings were also damaged.
The storm knocked off part of the roof of the gas station next to the Delta Planet shopping center, while a light pole fell onto the railroad tracks in the Nikola Tesla neighborhood.
A video is spreading on social networks showing the storm carrying away parts of the sports dome in the village of Popovac near Nis, while several football players took shelter behind the wooden fence on the pitch.
Workers of the Public Utilities Company Medijana have so far managed to remove a large number of branches and trees that have fallen on the roads. They also intervened because of trees that fell and blocked entrances to residential buildings and houses.
