Doctor Ivana Stefanovic from the Belgrade Emergency Department explained what we should do if we see a person collapsing in the street. According to her, we first we need to check if they are aware of their surroundings.

She explains that if they do not respond to us or to pain, they are surely unconscious and in that case it is necessary to call an ambulance.

"If a person regains consciousness and gets a little better, feel free to give them something to eat and drink and bring them into a cooled room. If they still don't feel well, call the emergency services and stay with them until our team arrives," Stefanovic told Tanjug.

Serbia is currently gripped by a heat wave with the temperature set to reach 40 degrees Celsius in the shade today.

Dr. Stefanovic recommended that everyone spend the day in cooled rooms.

"I know that the elderly don't like rooms with air conditioning, but if you ask your heart, it will thank you for it," said Stefanovic.

She advised everyone who has to go to work and use public transport, which sometimes does and other times does not have air conditioning, to always carry with them some liquid, something salty and sweet.

"The heart needs sugars, like fruit. But also something salty, since the body loses electrolytes through sweating. This will help you get through a day like this," said Stefanovic.
