We learn about the defense of the grandmother of a boy suspected of killing his brother (12) in Mladenovac
"For her, it was 'a part of the furniture' and tradition, the rifle was kept to shoot from on Christmas or when a child is born..."
Vesna L. (56), the grandmother of a boy (14) suspected of shooting and killing his younger brother (12) in Mladenovac with a hunting rifle, has been arrested and put in custody for up to 30 days, and as we learned, her defense during questioning was that the rifle in question was "a part of furniture" in the household.
"As her defense, she stated that she inherited the rifle from her late husband, and he from his father. For her, it was 'a part of the furniture' and tradition. She could not explain why she did not legalize it, i.e. hand it over to the police after the MUP invited citizens to hand in illegal weapons in the wake of a mass shooting in Mladenovac in May. They kept the rifle as part of tradition, to be able to shoot from on Christmas or when I child is born...," we have learned.
The woman was questioned yesterday at the Higher Public Prosecutor's Office in Belgrade on suspicion of unauthorized possession of a hunting rifle and ammunition, that were improperly secured, as a result of which her older grandson killed his younger brother two days prior.
The suspect is charged with the criminal offense unauthorized production, possession, carrying and trafficking of weapons and explosive substances in connection with serious offenses against general safety.
During the questioning, the suspect presented her defense and answered the prosecutor's questions.
The prosecution then suggested to the judge for preliminary proceedings that the suspect be detained due to public disturbance.
It is suspected that Vesna L. (56) kept a hunting rifle and 16 millimeter ammunition in her bedroom, in the family house, without permit, as well as that she acted contrary to regulations regarding safe storage of weapons and ammunition, resulting in unauthorized persons gaining access to them.
In this way, the suspect made the weapon available to her minor grandchildren, as a result of which on July 6, at around 1:15 pm, in the living room of the house where they live, her 14-year-old grandson used the said rifle to shoot and kill his younger brother.
