"Tires were screeching, 2 girls flew away, driver was distraught": Eyewitness of horrific Konjarnik accident
"One seemed slightly injured, and the other was lying motionless, unconscious"
D.M. (41), the driver of a Lancia, hit two teenage girls - M.A. and M.R., both 16 years old - at a pedestrian crossing last night around 9 pm in Belgrade's Konjarnjik neighborhood.
The girls were crossing the street despite a red light. According to eyewitnesses at the scene of the accident, a loud screeching of tires was heard first.
"First I heard a loud screeching of tires, it seems to me that he was driving fast, then I heard a thump and saw two girls fly up and fall down. One seemed slightly injured, and the other was lying motionless, unconscious. The driver got out of the car and grabbed his head. It was really horrible," says one eyewitness.
According to information available to us, the driver was not under the influence of alcohol, but was driving slightly over the speed limit.
The investigation is being conducted by the competent prosecutor's office, which has asked the police to provide them with all the necessary information.
We have learned that the vehicle has been sent for an extraordinary technical inspection.
One girl was admitted to the intensive care unit of the Emergency Center, and the other to the neurosurgery ward.
