When a crow does this it's preparing to attack: Pay attention, especially if the bird is of a particular color
The best way for people to protect themselves is to avoid places where crows nest, and if they find themselves there, to move away from the area as soon as possible
May is the time of year when crows nest and raise their young, and it is not uncommon for citizens to have unpleasant experiences - such as coming across an aggressive crow attacking them.
The best way for people to protect themselves is to avoid places where crows nest, and if they find themselves there, to move away from the area as soon as possible. Slobodan Knezevic from the Prirodnjak association told Tanjug that it is extremely important for people to know that the period of May is the time when crows intensively raise their young.
"They (the chicks) have by now had plumes for a long time, they are learning to fly and it often happens that they fall out of the nest. Gray crows are extremely caring parents, but also extremely territorial. They are trying to protect their offspring, including if it ends up falling on the ground. A crow will protect the chick from passers-by, but also from other animals - birds and pets," said Knezevic.
According to him, when they find themselves near the nest of gray crows, people should recognize the signals that the crows send and move away from that place.
"Those signals can be crows landing on nearby objects, such as pillars, benches, on the lower branches of trees, croaking, plucking leaves. Even before the attack, there will be 'false starts', where they will fly in our vicinity and if we do not recognize this and move away, then aggressive attacks may follow," said Knezevic.
He stated that when these warnings take place, one should not give in to fear and stop in one's tracks, but move away and let the gray crows take care of the chicks.
"You should not wave your hands or umbrellas because they recognize that as more unsafety," Knezevic stressed.
He said that if citizens know that gray crows are nesting near their house, they can use a hat, a cap, or an umbrella for protection and thus prevent minor injuries that the crows can cause, but he reiterated that it is necessary to just quickly move away from that location.
Yesterday, two women were attacked by crows in Belgrade. One was transported to the Emergency Center by ambulance, and the other went to see the doctor on her own.
