The deceased young man (25) and woman (23) who were found last night in an apartment in Emila Gavrila Street in Zrenjanin lived in a common-law union, the woman was pregnant and according to the first results of the investigation, they most likely got asphyxiated from the gas leaking from a gas stove, and that was almost a week ago.

This has been confirmed by the owner of the apartment where they lived who said with sadness in her voice that it was a great tragedy that befell two young people in love.

"I had the intention of selling the apartment and have already given the power of attorney to an agency to mediate since I am old and cannot really move around much. However, on Saturday, neighbors from Emila Gavrila Street called me and asked if I had sold the apartment because two young people came who heard that the apartment was empty and wanted to rent it," says the distressed owner.

She adds that they were nice and that the woman's pregnant stomach could be seen under her jacket, and that she felt for them and immediately agreed to rent the apartment to them.

"I felt sorry for them and I simply could not refuse them, but I told them that the apartment was for sale and that they would have to leave as soon as I found a buyer, and I also decided to charge them a symbolic rental price because I knew that they would not be there for long," our interlocutor recalls.

She adds that she gave them the keys right away, and that was last Saturday, less than a week ago.

"Yesterday, a guy from the agency called me and said that he had found a buyer and that he would take him to see the apartment. When they got there, he couldn't unlock the door, so he called me and when I came, they told me that the key was on the inside of the lock, and the neighbors told me that since they moved in, they hadn't heard or seen the tenants and that they hadn't turned on a light, while the neighbor's wall on which the stove in my apartment rests is completely hot.

We called the police and they told us to break down the door if it's my apartment and let them know what's going on. We did so and discovered horror. Two young people in the middle of the room showing no signs of life and the gas stove turned on the maximum so that the glass on it had cracked," the landlady tells us in a trembling voice.

She says that they immediately called the police, who quickly showed up and told them not to enter the apartment, and later told them while they were waiting for the ambulance and the prosecutor that the young man and woman most likely asphyxiated from the gas because there were no injuries that would indicate a violent death.

The bodies were sent for autopsy and the investigation will show the exact cause of death of the unfortunate couple.
