Telegraf in streets of Vienna: Police guard religious buildings, this is the current situation in the city
"Our intelligence services have reason to believe that an attack with an Islamist motive is planned in Vienna," the police said
A Telegraf.rs crew is in Vienna, where since this morning special police units have intensified their patrols, after receiving a tip that there could be a terrorist attack carried out against religious buildings in that city.
The city police warned the public on social media today about the increased presence of armed police and special forces in the city, which they do in rare cases.
"Our intelligence services have reason to believe that an Islamist-motivated attack is planned in Vienna," police said on Twitter in English.
The Viennese police announced that, as a precaution, certain facilities are under increased police surveillance and added that they cannot specify how long the special measures will last.
Our journalists, who are currently in Vienna, say that there is no panic on the streets, and that there is no significant presence of special forces in the city center.
"Everything is functioning normally, police vans have been spotted near certain religious buildings, but there is no panic, there are no armed special forces patrolling," reports our team.
Otherwise, Vienna is one of the safest capitals in the world and attacks by extremists are rare. The last attack took place in 2020 when a jihadist killed four people in a shootout before getting killed by the police.
