Chinese citizen who brutally beat his daughter on a tennis court in Belgrade has been sentenced
This verdict is final, because the parties in the proceedings, both the prosecution and the defense, waived their right to appeal
The Chamber of the First Basic Court in Belgrade today sentenced W.L., a Chinese citizen, to an eight-month prison sentence because he brutally beat his minor daughter, which was recorded by cameras, on a tennis court in Belgrade.
This verdict is final, because the parties in the proceedings, both the prosecution and the defense, waived their right to appeal.
This trial ended after one hearing, when the verdict was also announced.
The time spent in detention is included in the sentence, and his detention has been extended today, until he is sent to serve the sentence.
Explaining the verdict, the judge said that the panel took into account that the law in China is different when it comes to physical punishment of children, as well as that W.L. had no prior convictions and that the daughter did not join the criminal prosecution.
In its closing arguments, the prosecution requested that W.L. be sentenced to eight months, and sent to prison immediately.
On the other hand, the defense suggested that he should receive a sentence below the legal minimum.
Today, the defendant partially admitted to committing the criminal act and said that he was sorry that it happened, that he did not intend to break the law of our country, and that such a thing would never happen again.
He cried throughout the trial.
He was found guilty because of committing an act of domestic violence against his minor daughter, on October 17.
The defendant admitted during the hearing at the prosecution that he beat his daughter, justifying that by saying she had refused to continue training that day and that is why he wanted to send her back to the court.
He also said at the time that he had done the right thing and that it was allowed in China.
In October, a video showing the physical abuse appeared on social networks, where a man is seen slapping and dragging a girl, and kicking her after she fell to the ground.
