Novak makes it to Adelaide semi-finals, and says, "Happy Christmas Eve"
Djokovic is set for a new "meeting" with Medvedev
The best Serbian tennis player, Novak Djokovic, reached the semi-finals of the tournament in Adelaide, defeating Denis Shapovalov in two sets (6-3, 6-4), and thus setting up a new duel with Daniil Medvedev.
In visibly high spirits after the victory, Nole thanked the fans.
"Thank you all for coming, the atmosphere was great. Great support for both of us, you always make these night-time matches special for us players. Thanks for the energy and support. I think the result probably doesn't paint a true picture of what happened. It was an uncertain match, two hours for two sets. The first set was exhausting for both of us, we pushed each other to the limit. He made a few mistakes and then the match turned in my favor, I started to feel more relaxed. He came back later, but I managed to maintain my level and I'm happy that I won tonight," said Djokovic.
The match was briefly interrupted because of fireworks...
"It was probably because of Orthodox Christmas. Happy Christmas Eve to everyone," said Novak. (Serbians, as well as Russians, celebrate the holiday on January 7.)
Excellent support was not missing in this match either.
"I am blessed to play at this level. I never take any match for granted. It feels like I'm playing at home and they make it special for me so I'm grateful for that support."
Daniil Medvedev is now waiting for him in the semi-finals.
"I hope for another long night. I don't think there will be many short points tomorrow, although we are both serving well. When you play against Daniil you have to be mentally ready for a long match. He has established himself as a Grand Slam champion. Someone I respect a lot. We had some great duels, I hope it will be like that tomorrow, too," stressed Djokovic.
