Stano: The EU encourages the Serbian authorities to enable the holding of EuroPride
Stano said that the EU supports equality and rejects all forms of discrimination
After the announcement that EuroPride, that was supposed to be held in Belgrade, would be cancelled, the European Union encouraged the Serbian authorities to continue communication with organizers in order to find a solution for holding the event in peace and security, European Commission spokesman Peter Stano said today.
In a written statement to the media, he stressed that the EU attaches great importance to this EuroPride being held in peaceful circumstances and with the safety of the participants.
Stano said that the EU supports equality and rejects all forms of discrimination, reminding that EuroPride was first held in 1992 and advocates for equal rights of LGBTIQ+ people throughout Europe.
"We expect our closest partners to devote themselves to the protection and improvement of human rights. This includes respecting the rights of LGBTIQ+ persons, including their right to freedom of assembly and expression, in accordance with the constitution and international obligations regarding human rights," Stano stated.
