Patriarch of the Serbian Orthodox Church Porfirije said today, after a meeting with Montenegrin Prime Minister Dritan Abazovic, that there is agreement on the Fundamental Agreement, that the text has been harmonized and should now pass through the Synod of the Serbian Orthodox Church and be confirmed, after which a signing date would be set.

"Proceeding from the fact that the Church is separated from the state and that our Church, wherever it has jurisdiction, absolutely respects every state and its laws," said Porfirije.

He said that the final phase of drafting the Fundamental Agreement has started.

"At this moment, I think I can say that there is agreement on the Fundamental Agreement, noting that procedures must be followed when it comes to both the government of Montenegro and the Serbian Orthodox Church. The existing text that has been harmonized must pass through the Synod and be confirmed and accepted, and if God willing everything goes well, then we will decide on the date of the signing," the patriarch stressed.

He added that once everything regarding the signing of the Fundamental Agreement has been done, it will contribute to normalization of relations between the state of Montenegro and the Serbian Orthodox Church.
