A Croatian woman from Baranja gave birth to a child in a vineyard in Marfa, Hungary, left the baby there and then fled to Osijek in Croatia. When she was admitted to the hospital in that towns, the doctors realized what had happened, so they alerted all relevant services.
An ambulance soon reached the vineyard, finding the baby still alive. A helicopter transported the newborn to the hospital, but it later died.
Hungarian police officers spoke about this tragedy on social networks. They said that this is one of the darkest stories they have experienced.
"Our job is not only physically but often psychologically demanding. Especially when, despite all our effort and determination, we end up losing, and we were so close to saving a life. A woman (31) with Croatian citizenship, who gave birth in Hungary, left the baby in the vineyard and fled to Osijek, felt remorse too late and told the terrible story to our Croatian colleagues," Hungarian police officers said.
The Croatian Ministry of the Interior told Nova TV that given the nature of the event, they will not disclose any information to the public, "except for the fact that the police are taking all necessary measures and actions within their competence, including international police cooperation."
They added that the Hungarians will most likely take over the criminal investigation.
