Largest scale model of the Danube basin in the world is located in Kovin: It was made for a president
This small town in southern Banat, northern Serbia, is an ideal destination for a weekend vacation, especially for residents of Smederevo, Pancevo and Belgrade
Kovin is located about 50 kilometers from Belgrade, in southern Banat, on the banks of the Danube. This is a town that is becoming an increasingly popular tourist destination in this part of Serbia due to its diverse offerings.
Fans of fishing and and camping who come from the capital, but also from the neighboring Pancevo and Smederevo, will not want to miss visiting Kovin at least during the weekend, because they can enjoy their favorite activities on the river here and return home quickly and easily.
Zarkovacka, Stojkova and Zilova river islands are interesting to sport fishermen and swimmers, while a Danube arm, 1,800 meters long, is an ideal natural shelter for boats.
The largest scale model of the Danube basin in the world is located in Kovin; cast in concrete, it is 146 meters long and faithfully depicts the riverbed. It was created to show to lifelong President of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia Josip Broz Tito.
Today, this scale model is a perfect teaching tool for those sailing on the river, since they can see how it meanders, where the embankments are located, through which places the mighty Danube flows...
But, although the Danube is the backbone of tourism in Kovin, this city and its surroundings have many other tourist attractions. There is the so-called umbrella street decorated with murals by Banat artists, the medieval town of Kovin, the Kraljevac Special Nature Reserve, a 16th-century monastery in Bavaniste, the Cardak recreational center, and as well as the Marija Terezija Bridge, which today spans over dry land.
Although there is no exact data about who built this bridge, or when it happened, it is assumed that it was built in the 18th century, above an arm of the River Ponjavica.
Finally, to come to Kovin and its surroundings and not to visit the village of Skorenovac means not getting to know the soul of this part of Banat. Skorenovac is known for its extremely developed rural tourism, and guests from abroad usually come during the summer and fall, during the preparation of winter preserves, which they make together with the hosts in the traditional, old-fashioned way.
