Eyewitness of serious traffic on Pancevo Bridge: Horrible sound, awful accident, I saw vehicle hanging

Workers in a warehouse near the Pancevo Bridge, where a serious traffic accident took place last evening, say that they will never forget the sound that was heard when it happened.

The accident happened yesterday at around 6:20 pm on the Pancevo Bridge in the direction of Belgrade. Two people lost their lives when a German license plates BMW and a Zastava truck collided, which got cut in two due to the force of the impact.

It is suspected that the driver of the truck, together with a passenger, fell out of the vehicle and over the bridge's protective fence. One person fell into the river, while the other hit the foot of a pillar. The ambulance crew could only pronounce them dead.

"I was working all day, so I was getting ready to go home when I heard a loud sound, I can't describe it, like very loud braking. I ran outside and looked at the bridge where I saw the broken fence and a vehicle hanging. Sirens, firefighters, ambulance, police, they all arrived quickly," a warehouse worker told Blic.

He said that traffic accidents often happen on the Pancevo Bridge, but that he cannot remember one like this.

"I've been working under the bridge for a long time, I've seen and heard many things, but usually these are some minor accidents because there are traffic jams every day, so people lose patience, especially in summer when it's hot. People don't even go there on foot, because the protective fence is bad, the bridge is long, and when a car passes by you, everything shakes. I don't know what could have caused such an accident. I heard that two people died, a great tragedy," he said.
