- We expected happier news, but it is what it is - Peris told Telegraf.rs
The father of Matej Peris, Nenad Peris, confirmed for Telegraf.rs that the Serbian police informed him that the body of a young man has been found in the Danube near Ada Huja, Belgrade, which according to the description and the clothing, corresponds to his son.
"The DNA is still to be compared, but judging by the clothes, the young man matches Matej. Well, that's what I can tell you, I don't have anything else for now. It's very tough for me and we expected some happier information, but every truth is the truth and I have to face it, me and my family. It is what it is, I can't say anything more. It's very hard for me. I will come to Belgrade," said Nenad Peris.
As Telegraf.rs has learned, in order to make a positive identification, the DNA taken from the body recovered from the river today will be compared with that of Nenad Peris, the father of Matej, a young man from Split, Croatia.
The body of a young man was spotted by a ship's crew, and pulled out this morning at 9:30.
The body had jeans, a T-shirt and a white sneaker on it. The police pulled out the body, and forensic experts were at the scene.
The body of an unknown male person was spotted this morning at around 9:20 in the Danube near Ada Huja, it was confirmed for Tanjug from the Ministry of the Interior. The ministry said that the investigation is ongoing. The identity of the person will be determined later, while the media report that it may be that of Matej Peris from Split.
Peris disappeared in the night between December 30 and 31, when he left his friends and walked out of the Belgrade nightclub Gotik. Since then, his disappearance has been a great mystery to everybody.
Footage from several security cameras was immediately published, showing Peris running, stopping a taxi, running again, and then allegedly going into the river.
The Ministry of the Interior also published the reconstruction of his movements after he left the club.
What is certain is that Matej left the club and started running upstream along the Sava River, towards the Promenade. He was wearing only a black t-shirt and was not stopping. There were fears that someone was chasing him, however, one of the videos that appeared clearly shows that Matej is running fast in a street full of people, but that nobody is running after him and that the circumstances were otherwise calm.
At one point, Matej went past a vehicle that he didn't even seem to notice, and he also passed between a bus and a fence, not paying attention to the danger from the traffic.
His father spent two months in Belgrade, hoping all the time that his son would be found.
