As many as 135,901 people died in Serbia last year, which is almost 30,000 more than in 2020, breaking a previous record. This number of deaths has not been recorded for at least the last two decades.

Good news is there have been more births
What is encouraging is that more babies were born last year, albeit slightly compared to 2020.
"In Serbia, in the period January-December 2021, the number of live births was 62,062. Compared to the same period last year, when the number of live births was 61,993, there was an increase of 369 or 0.6 percent," according to the Statistical Office.
What kind of year 2021 was going to be was indicated by undertakers in the fall, who were very busy, especially in October and November. It was in those months that they organized the most funerals.
Because of this in many cities the deceased were laid to rest even on Sundays, morning funerals were introduced, which had not been the practice until then, and funerals were scheduled 4, 5, 6, and even 7 days in advance in some places. During this period, many cemeteries expanded.
