Dr. Jovanovic: After New Year, 80% was Delta strain, 20% Omicron. Now it's the other way around
Speaking about the infectivity of the virus, she explains that an infected person has the greatest amount of the virus on the first to second day before the onset of symptoms
Dr. Snezana Jovanovic, the head of the Vatreno Oko lab, says that the Omicron strain now dominates in Serbia.
"According to the data from the Medical Faculty of the University of Belgrade, the Delta strain dominated in December, and after the New Year it was 80 percent Delta, 20 percent Omicron, while in mid-January, the situation changed - 80 percent Omicron and 20 percent Delta," Jovanovic told RTS.
She stressed that we should not forget that even in this period there is not only Omicron but also Delta which sometimes gives more difficult clinical pictures.
"At the start of December, there were 8 to 10 percent positive out of the total samples. Somewhere around January 6, 7, the percentage of positivity increased to 42 to 43 percent, and in the last three days, from 50 to 54 percent of the total number of processed sample," said Snezana Jovanovic.
Speaking about the infectivity of the virus, she explains that with Omicron, an infected person has the greatest amount of the virus on the first to second day before the onset of symptoms and until the second, third day after the onset of symptoms. With Delta, it is two to three days before the onset of symptoms and seven to ten days after.
