Today I will be very proud to, as a citizen, propose to give Novak Djokovic the capital's greatest recognition - the Award of the City of Belgrade Award in the field of sports, said Deputy Mayor of Belgrade Goran Vesic.

He told TV Pink that Novak deserved to be given with this award a long time ago and explained that it is the most important award that a citizen of Belgrade can receive from their city, which is presented to recipients each April. He also added that he is sure that a commission that decides will evaluate and accept the proposal.

Vesic assessed that Novak is Serbia's greatest athlete of all times and currently the greatest athlete on the planet.

Speaking about Djokovic's arrival in Belgrade, Vesic said that everyone is expecting him and that as a friend, he hopes that the tennis player will emerge stronger from this situation.

"He is already the winner, and this decision of the Australian authorities is political," said Vesic. The deputy mayor assessed that the decision to deport Novak is based on hatred towards this athlete, and added that they would not have behaved like that if Djokovic came from a bigger country.

"It's a pathetic attempt to prevent him from winning the Australian Open for the 10th time. He will win other Grand Slams, and this will remain a stain on Australia," said Vesic and added that the Australian governent behaved in a fascist manner.

He stressed that no one will behave in a similar way towards Australia's basketball team that will play in Belgrade on February 12, or towards the athletes from that country, who will come to Serbia for the World Athletics Indoor Championships in March.

"Every citizen from anywhere in the world is welcome. Serbia is a country of hospitality," Vesic concluded.
