"Data that will be released today will be concerning. And what I'm about to say is depressing"

Professor Dr. Branislav Tiodorovic, a member of the Crisis HQ set up to combat coronavirus in Serbia, told TV Prva that a prolonged school break could help curb the epidemic, but that two more dangers await us. He also said that the data that will be published today will be a cause for concern.

When he spoke about the two dangers, he said that they are the much more contagious Delta Plus strain, which will arrive in Serbia, but also the seasonal flu. He recalled that the medical part of the Crisis HQ previously asked for the fall break to be extended, because children become infected primarily in their families and through contacts outside the school, but then quickly transmit the virus in the school.

"As you can see, the Delta strain is very contagious, and soon the Delta Plus strain will come to us, more contagious than this one," he told the morning program of TV Prva, and added:

"The data that will be published today, you'll see, will be very worrying. This is the most severe epidemic that has been recorded both in the world and in our country," he said and added that he wanted to stress that all existing measures must be strictly respected.

He also announced what will be the topic of the next meeting of the Crisis HQ.

"At the next session we will assess the appearance of the seasonal flu, and you know that when it comes to the flu, it's children who spread it more easily," he said and added:

"What I'm about to say will be depressing, and you know that I have always been an optimist. In June, I said there were two scenarios. One was that the measures must be strictly observed and that there must be penalties. That scenario has failed, and the other one remained, mass infection."

He said that according to that scenario, vaccinated persons will also become infected, only they will tolerate the virus better.

"All of this will obviously last until everyone gets infected, and the virus will unfortunately, according to that scenario, claim many victims. We have two choices again, either we get serious and try to calm the situation and bring it under control or thing's won't go well," he said.

Asked if he can assume in which direction the situation will develop, this member of the Crisis HQ said that he is no longer as optimistic as he used to be. Simply put, he said, the death toll is catastrophic, and there is no longer a person who does not have another in their environment who has had coronavirus.

The solution, he repeated once again, is vaccination because according to the latest data, it is now necessary for the vaccination coverage to be 80 percent.

"That's the key to coronavirus," he concluded.
