A boy, 4, from Kastela in Croatia was bitten by a black widow spider, for which he was treated at the Split KBC.

He allegedly received the painful bite while playing in the kindergarten and the teachers were the first to suspect it.

The boy felt cramps and nausea, a sting site was visible and he was immediately taken to the hospital where he received antivenom.

According to Dalmatinski Portal, everything went well and the boy is doing fine.

Black widow - the most venomous spider: How to recognize it?

As Telegraf.rs has been told earlier at the Institute for Biocides and Medical Ecology, to their knowledge, this species has not been reported in Serbia. However, they do not rule out the possibility that it may appear.

"It is not ruled out that it will not appear in the near future, considering that summers are getting warmer and drier," said our interlocutors at the Institute.

They explain that the black widow belongs to a species of poisonous spiders that is widespread in the Mediterranean.

"It is black with characteristic red patterns. The spider is not aggressive and bites mostly happen by accident when people work in the field, such as mowing grass and collecting hay. Its venom is a neurotoxin, and the symptoms of a bite are pain and muscle stiffness, vomiting and sweating... People fully recover within 3 to 5 days after the bite. Fatal outcome is very rare," Telegraf.rs has been told at the Institute for Biocides and Medical Ecology.
