Little girl Helena is ready for a new round of battling brain tumor: "I arrived in Moscow"
Her recovery last year was celebrated across Serbia and no one even thought that the dangerous disease could return so insidiously
"I arrived in Moscow. I got a hat from the flight attendant. Thank you for your great support and please help my friends as well. I'll be in touch again on Monday. Love and kisses from your Helena."
This message appeared beneath a photo of a cute golden-haired girl Helena Gavran who is preparing for a new round of her battle against a vicious disease - a brain tumor. Her recovery last year was celebrated by entire Serbia, and no one even thought that the dangerous disease could return so insidiously, without any symptoms.
"We don't know how. Helena is cheerful, strong, she looks healthy... She had a regular check-up and they only told us that it had returned. The disease returned, insidiously, showing no symptoms. We don't know how much longer, how much longer like this," Helena's aunt Jelena Isakov told Telegraf.
She announced at the time that Helena will continue her treatment at the Rogachev children's oncology clinic in Moscow and that the funds are being raised again, because there are about 50,000 euros left in the account from the previous campaigns, and they need at least as much for new therapies.
The girl with long, reddish hair and beautiful blue eyes won us over again and again when she persevered through difficult chemotherapy with a smile and dance, and overcame her brain tumor. The disease was first discovered when she started vomiting, became drowsy, irritable and angry. It was thought then that she was being jealous because her youngest sister, the third daughter in the family, was born.
In August 2019, she was diagnosed with hydrocephalus, and then a tumor on the cerebellum. She underwent emergency surgery, the tumor was removed, but it was the treatment abroad that gave hope of recovery. Sometime in early November 2019, half a million euros was raised and Helena went to Paris.
The public in Serbia closely followed the course of the little girl's treatment. We were happy when she was, danced with her, went through all the painful therapies, we were sad when she cried because of a ponytail that had to be cut when her hair started to fall out, she was always in our thoughts as if she was our own family...
"I will be golden-haired again, my hair will grow," these were the words of the brave little girl back then. And indeed. The hair grows, slowly but surely. And Helena knows that best, just as we know that she will return to us from Moscow with good news.
