More people die than are born: In just 9 months, Priboj lost almost 300 inhabitants

Although vaccination is ongoing, statistics indicate that the number of deaths from coronavirus is not stagnating but is on the contrary increasing

If the current demographic trends continue, Serbia could lose a city the size of Smederevo by the end of the year, because the negative population growth will amount to about 64,000 people, according to the data of the Statistical Office. Based only on the negative population growth, i.e. the difference between the number of births and deaths, the municipality of Priboj lost 270 inhabitants in the first 9 months of this year.

371 Priboj residents died during that period of time, according to data from the municipal Registry Office, which indicates that there is a noticeable increase in the number of deaths, considering also that a total of 375 people died in the 12 months of last year, RINA reports.

Unfortunately, although vaccination is ongoing, statistics indicate that the number of deaths from coronavirus is not stagnating but is on the contrary increasing. Data from the Public Health Institute of Uzice shows that from March until December last year, 44 people from Priboj died as a result of coronavirus infection. On the other hand, in the first 6 months of this year, 46 men and 31 women died of coronavirus, i.e. a total of 77 people, the Uzice Public Health Institute confirmed for the media.

According to data from the Health Center, 101 babies were born in Priboj in the first 9 months, which means that based only on the negative population growth, the municipality of Priboj lost 270 inhabitants from January until October.

At the state level, the largest increase in the number of deaths was recorded in the Belgrade region. In other regions of Serbia, mortality has increased by a fifth on average.

Since such a dramatic increase in population mortality is linked to coronavirus, demographers rightly fear that September will break "black records." That has already happened in Priboj, and since September alone, 15 deaths as a result of coronavirus have been registered in this municipality.
