The commander of the Central Prison in Belgrade died in the hospital on Monday as a result of coronavirus.

"We are informing the public with great sadness that a member of the Security Service of the District Prison in Belgrade has died from coronavirus in the hospital. The Administration for the Enforcement of Penal Sanctions and the staff of the District Prison in Belgrade sincerely sympathize with the family of our colleague whom we will all remember as a noble and always smiling person," the Administration announced.

"Our colleague was initially treated at home, and after his health deteriorated, he was transferred to the hospital, where, unfortunately, he passed away. Coronavirus brings with it an unpredictable course of the disease that can be fatal to many. Therefore, the Administration for the Enforcement of Penal Sanctions appeals on all citizens to get vaccinated. At this moment, 64 percent of convicted and detained persons in the entire system have received the vaccine, with which they have shown great responsibility for themselves and their environment," the statement added.
