He said that the symptoms are different, but that it is not more deadly than other mutations of coronavirus

The Delta strain of coronavirus has officially arrived in our area - it has been registered in two people in Kosovo and Metohija. Experts claim that this strain has probably appeared in central Serbia as well, but has not yet been "caught" in a laboratory, Novosti writes.

"It was clear to us that the Delta strain will arrive in our country as soon as it appeared around the world," said virologist Milanko Sekler and added that the Delta strain is probably already here: "It is probably already in circulation, so the only thing that is uncertain is when it will be officially isolated."

Dr. Sekler noted that there is no reason to fear, because the Delta strain is not more deadly than other mutations, it only causes a different clinical picture.

"The symptoms are headache, dry and sore throat. It does not cause fever and loss of sense of taste and smell, and among the elderly it can lead to more abundant secretion from the nose."

He recalls that the most effective protection is vaccination, wearing masks and distancing.

"We have relaxed too much and many no longer wear masks. This is a big problem, especially for unvaccinated people who are most affected by the new strain. That is why I appeal on those who have not been immunized to do so as soon as possible, while masks must be worn everywhere. That the vaccine is the best protection is evidenced by the example of Great Britain, where 80 percent of citizens received the first dose, so that among the new cases, the number of vaccinated and revaccinated is only one in 100," said Sekler.

If immunization in Serbia remains at only 50 percent, the scenario that awaits us in the fall, as Dr. Sekler pointed out, is 4,000 new daily cases.
