Russia today declared a diplomat from North Macedonia a persona non grata in response to a similar move by Skopje last month, the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced.

"The charge d'affaires of North Macedonia, Olivera Causevska-Dimovska, was summoned to the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where she was handed a note declaring an employee of the Embassy of North Macedonia in Moscow a persona non grata," RIA Novosti reports.

The ministry said in a statement that North Macedonia's move was unjustified.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of North Macedonia announced on May 18 that, in accordance with Article 9 of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, it had decided to declare a diplomat of the Embassy of the Russian Federation an unwelcome person in North Macedonia.

That statement did not say which Russian diplomat was expelled and why.
