Nighttime feast: Bear breaks apart wild hog feeder and helps himself to some corn
Hunters say they will quickly will fix the feeder and refill it with corn, which is very important food for forest animals
A bear broke apart an automatic feeder set up by hunters in the forest and ate corn from it that was intended for wild hogs. This happened in the area of Mangura above Nova Varos, which is located between the villages of Drazevici and Radoinja.
"The automatic feeder releases corn onto the ground after a certain period of time. The bear came at a time when there was nothing there, broke apart the feeder that is attached to a tree and ate all the corn that was not intended for him. We know it was this is large animal because he left traces," Darko Zivkovic, a gamekeeper with Kozomor from Nova Varos, told RINA.
Similar feeders have been installed in several locations in this area. These are adapted barrels with a digitally controlled engine on the bottom. The mechanism is powered by a solar battery. According to information available to the hunters, this bear came down from Murtenica, and he has not visited this part of the hunting ground since last winter.
"Herbivores mostly inhabit our territory, and this individual who ate the corn also testifies to that. However, we also have two carnivores and they represent a potential danger for livestock of the local population," said Darko.
Hunters say they will quickly will fix the feeder and refill it with corn, which is very important food for forest animals. As bears can be seen more and more often in populated areas, Darko offered some advice about how to behave if you come across one.
"You shouldn't play dead or run. Not a lot of people know this, but it is definitely is effective: when you meet a bear, you should start talking to it in a calm tone, saying anything. It will stop for a moment, realize that you are harmless and continue on its way," this hunter from Nova Varos stressed.
