A case of the African variant of coronavirus, i.e. the Beta strain according to the classification of the World Health Organization, has been confirmed in Kosovo and Metohija.

The Institute of Public Health of Kosovo announced that a patient with this strain of coronavirus is being treated at the Infectious Diseases Clinic in Pristina.

It is added that all contacts the infected person had are being investigated in order to possibly detect other cases.

A member of the Crisis HQ told Telegraf.rs on Monday that the Indian strain of coronavirus is probably present in Serbia, and it is only a matter of time before the so-called mutant gets diagnosed.

The African strain of coronavirus was discovered in December of last year when it was said that it also affects younger people, which explains the rapid spread of the infection in the second wave.

Doctors noticed at the time that the epidemiological picture was changing and that there were more and more young patients without comorbidities who developed severe symptoms of Covid-19.
