Fewer births, more deaths in Serbia in first 4 months: Fewer babies everywhere
From January to April this year, 18,894 children were born in Serbia
18,894 children were born in Serbia from January to April this year, which is a decrease of 1.4 percent compared to the same period last year when 19,166 babies were born, the Statistical Office has said.
The number of deaths in the first four months was 46,194 and increased by 33.3 percent compared to the same period last year when 34,642 people died, Tanjug reported.
According to the data from the Office from April 27, 33,535 people died in Serbia in the first quarter of this year, while 14,334 children were born, so the number of deaths is higher than the number of new births by 19,201, Beta reported.
Official statistics show that the number of deaths is 7,518 or 28.9 percent higher than in the same period last year.
Observed by regions, the largest increase in the number of deaths was recorded in the area of Sumadija and Western Serbia. In those regions, 12,180 people died in the first quarter - 36.7 percent more than in the same period in 2020.
In Belgrade, the number of deaths has been 8,310, which is 30.2 percent more, and in Southern and Eastern Serbia, 4,560 people died, which is 25.5 percent more.
The smallest increase in the number of deaths happened in the province of Vojvodina. From January to March, 8,485 people died there, 19.6 percent more than in the same period last year.
Official statistics in the said period in our country record a lower number of newborns.
14,334 babies were born, which is 188 or 1.3 percent less than in 2020.
In Sumadija and Western Serbia, 4,473 babies were born, which is 6.7 percent less than last year, in Southern and Eastern Serbia, the number was 1,551 or 2.9 percent less, in the region of Belgrade, it was 4,656 - 2 percent less.
Only in the area of Vojvodina the number of newborns remained almost the same, 3,654, which is only one less compared to the first quarter of last year.
