Minister of Foreign Affairs Nikola Selakovic has decided that Nikola Zurovac, the ambassador of Serbia to Poland, must urgently return to our country.

As Blic has learned, Zurovac signed a letter of support to the Polish LGBT community along with 40 other ambassadors from other countries, but did not inform Minister Selakovic about it.

The Serbian diplomacy was left completely unprepared for the expectedly negative reaction from Poland's conservative authorities. The consequence of everything was Selakovic's canceled visit to Poland.

"Zurovac signed the letter a day before Selakovic's visit to Poland. This was met with a negative reaction from the conservative authorities there, especially since the countries of the region, Hungary, Romania and Bulgaria, did not support the letter. Due to this, the visit of the minister of foreign affairs to Poland, which was supposed to take place today and tomorrow, was canceled," a source told Blic on Wednesday.

Selakovic in the end decided to recall Ambassador Zurovac, and his return will be a topic during today's meeting of the Government of Serbia.

In order to avoid such diplomatic situations going forward, the source said, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has reminded the diplomatic-consular network that it is "imperative that all diplomatic and consular missions inform the ministry and ask for consent for possible association, co-sponsorship or signing of statements, declarations, joint letters and similar documents that carry explicit or implicit political consequences."

The source pointed out that such a "reminder" has been sent, although Zurovac himself, according to valid rules, was under obligation to ask for the consent of the ministry before signing the letter.
