Stefanovic: Assembly will make decision on reintroducing compulsory military service in Serbia
The minister said that he personally supports military service
Minister of Defense of Serbia Nebojsa Stefanovic said today that the decision about reintroducing compulsory military service in Serbia should be made by the National Assembly.
Stefanovic told TV Prva that it was the National Assembly that decided to "freeze" compulsory military service.
"We will coordinate the proposal with the president of the Republic and the government. We did not want to make such an important decision overnight, we entered a complex process of a public debate, experts from various spheres are discussing it. The debate will end in the National Assembly," Stefanovic stressed.
He said that his personal position is to support regular military service.
"I know what the benefits are. I think it's good for personality development, for creating an active reserve and training young people in some military skills. I do not wish to impose my personal position," said Stefanovic.
He stressed that "young people will not go to the Army to be cleaners and janitors" but to learn some military skills.
"We want a new model that is two-way," Stefanovic stressed and explained that it is necessary to use the knowledge of young people, but also to transfer knowledge important for the country's defense to them.
Stefanovic said that, if introduced, compulsory military service should last four to six months.
