There is a lot of pressure on the healthcare system due to the new increase in the number coronavirus cases, and stricter measures are needed, especially when it comes to gatherings of a larger number of people, State Secretary in the Ministry of Health Mirsad Djerlek said today.

"The situation is analyzed on a daily basis and I believe in the experience and credibility of the people in the Crisis HQ and am sure that they will make the best decision," Djerlek told RTS.

According to him, the situation in Belgrade is alarming, but also in other cities.

"Yesterday we had 3,600 examinations in Covid clinics in Belgrade, 4,000 the day before yesterday, and the number of hospital admissions has increased compared to the number of discharges. I expect that (Health) Minister Loncar will decide on expanding capacities, which means returning some hospitals into the Covid system," said Djerlek.

He added that the situation had also deteriorated in Vojvodina, Sabac, Kragujevac and almost all parts of Serbia, but assessed that the further spread of the virus will be stopped successfully.

"What is good news is the immunization that is going in the best order. Another half a million vaccines from the Chinese manufacturer Sinopharm are coming, and a regular delivery from Pfizer will arrive on Monday. That is why it's important that the spread of the virus does not stop the immunization," Djerlek stressed.

According to his assessment, if the spread of the virus is stopped and vaccination continues, it is to be expected that over two million citizens will receive both doses of the vaccine by June.
