In 5 years, 64 children died in accidents in Serbia: "Before as pedestrians, now as passengers"

Data from 2013 showed that only 32 percent of parents were using special seats for children in their cars, and that 90 percent of those used them incorrectly

In the last five years, 64 children died in traffic accidents, says the director of the Traffic Safety Agency Dusko Pesic.

He told TV K1 that the situation is better than before, but that it is still not at a satisfactory level.

"If we compare it with some previous period, the situation is much better today than before. For example, in 1997 and 1998, 57 and 58 children died, respectively. Today, that number is significantly lower, but we are still not satisfied," said Pesic.

He said that Serbia wants to stand side by side with best countries in this sense, such as Norway. He recalled that there are have been no children killed in traffic accidents in Norway for the fourth year in a row.

Earlier, children were predominantly victims as pedestrians, today as passengers, because they do not sit in their seats or don't wear seatbelts properly.

Pesic says that since 2016, the Agency has been conducting a campaign to increase the proper use of children's seats.

"In 2013, a survey showed that only 32 percent of parents use them, 90 percent of whom did it improperly. Today, 62 percent of parents use a seat for children," said Pesic.
