The Diocese of Vranje announced that the Bishop of Vranje Pahomije (68) is infected with coronavirus and that he is hospitalized in the Clinical Hospital Center (KBC) "Dr. Dragisa Misovic" in Belgrade.

"We are informing the faithful that the presence of Covid-19 has been confirmed in His Eminence the Bishop of Vranje Mr. Pahomije. The bishop was tested on Monday, February 8, 2020, exhibiting a milder clinical picture, and there was no need for hospitalization, but he remained in home isolation. As a precautionary measure and for further treatment, the bishop was sent to Belgrade to the KBC "Dr. Dragisa Misovic" for monitoring and examination," the diocese said in a statement.

They thanked the medical staff and others who are caring about the bishop's health.

"The public will be informed about any change in the health of our arch pastor," they said.

2020 marked 28 years since Bishop Pahomije became the bishop of Vranje.

Pahomije (secular name Tomislav) Gacic was elected as the bishop of Vranje on May 28, 1992. On August 23 of the same year, he was ordained and enthroned in the Diocese of Vranje. The ordination was performed by then patriarch of the Serbian Orthodox Church (SPC) Pavle, together with several other SPC hierarchs.

Gacic was born in Cecava near Teslic, a town now in the Serb Republic (RS). He was in the monasteries of Ozren and Visoki Decani, before getting ordained as a monk in 1973, and being given the rank of deacon by then Bishop of Raska and Prizren and later SPC Patriarch Pavle.
