New coronavirus strain topic at today's Crisis HQ meeting: Hungary already has 5 cases
Is the new strain a threat to Serbia?
Health Minister Zlatibor Loncar said today, after he received the Sinopharm vaccine against Covid 19, that a new strain of coronavirus had arrived in Hungary and that five cases have been confirmed in that country.
He said that this is something that is a cause for concern, and will be a topic at today's session of the Crisis HQ.
"The new strain that has appeared in Hungary worries us. They already have five people, if not more with the new strain, they came from Brazil, South Africa... That is what we will talk about today at the Crisis HQ. It's not realistic for us to prevent it from reaching us, but we can make it arrive as late as possible," said Loncar.
He added that it is better to "welcome" the new strain with the best possible epidemiological situation, than to have it spread faster.
When asked by journalists whether that means closing the border with Hungary, he said that five cases is not a reason for a border shutdown.
"We have to monitor that. It will surely be a topic in the country where it appeared, that has multiple cases. Hungary is a serious country, they have found all those contacts, it doesn't suit them either to have the virus spread, and when Hungary takes all the measures, then it is less likely for it (new strain) to cross over to us. Another thing, if we want to do the vaccination campaign well, we also need a good epidemiological situation," said Loncar.
