The use of Bitcoins and trading with this digital currency is one of the topics being discussed by members of the Serbian National Assembly today.

Explaining a new proposal of the Law on Digital Property, Minister of Finance Sinisa Mali also explained the use of Bitcoins.

"Bitcoin is the best known cryptocurrency. The goal is to use it as a means of payment, because there is a sufficient critical mass that has accepted it. You have several types - private and public networks, then those that are under control of all participants or only those who are networked in that one network. The Law on Digital Property regulates the area so that digital currency cannot be used without your name and surname, without being registered," said Mali.

As an example, he mentioned that if a person has 100 Bitcoins and wants to pay with them - some accept it, some do not.

"With the new law, it will be possible to exchange Bitcoins for dinars. This is done in order not to lag behind that growing segment of the economy, that is, to give innovative, young people a chance to do it here, not abroad," he said.

As he added, everything will be done with the approval of the Securities Commission and the National Bank of Serbia.

President of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia Ivica Dacic reacted to this by joking that everything about the use of Bitcoin is very complicated and called on Minister of the Interior Aleksandar Vulin to "arrest those responsible".

"I asked Minister Vulin how he intends to arrest illegally acquired Bitcoins. But, that is now... we are going into metaphysical discussions, but that is not on the agenda today," Dacic warned.

Otherwise, during this session, which started yesterday, the people's deputies (MPs) will consider several draft laws and drafts on amendments to laws, and the voting is scheduled for tomorrow.

Among the acts that are the subject of the debate are the Draft Law on Amendments to the Law on Determining Public Interest and Special Procedures for Expropriation and Issuance of Construction Permits for the Realization of the Belgrade Waterfront Project, the Draft Law on Amendments to the Law on Temporary Regulation of Public Media Service Fees, and the Draft Law on Determining the Guarantee Scheme as a measure of support for the economy in order to mitigate the consequences of the Covid-19 pandemic.

There are also the Draft Law on Digital Property, the Draft Law on Fiscalization, the Draft Law on Amendments to the Law on Restitution of Confiscated Property and Compensation,  the Draft Law on Amendments to the Law on Prevention of Money Laundering and Terrorism Financing, the Draft Law on Amendments to the Law on Excises, as well as several draft laws on Amendments to the Law on Taxation.
