Members of the Serbian Ministry of Interior, the Service for the Fight against Organized Crime, in cooperation with the Higher Public Prosecutor's Office in Sremska Mitrovica, and in coordination with the Prosecutor's Office for Organized Crime, arrested two people on suspicion that they organized illegal border crossing for seven illegal migrants, whose remains found in a container in Paraguay.
A Moroccan citizen, H.M. (30), and an Algerian citizen, S.K. (29) have been arrested on suspicion that they committed the crimes of illegal crossing of the state border and people smuggling.
According to the charges, in agreement with other unidentified persons, they placed the migrants in a container for railway transport of goods, in order to avoid checks on the border between the Republic of Serbia and the Republic of Croatia.
The suspects will be detained for up to 48 hours before they are brought before the Higher Public Prosecutor's Office in Sremska Mitrovica, along with a criminal report.
Earlier, reports said that the seven young men entered the container believing it was headed for Austria or Italy. However, it went to the port of Rijeka in Croatia, where it was loaded onto a ship. The container then took months to reach its final destination in Paraguay, where the remains of the migrants were discovered.
