Dramatic action to rescue girl from a Belgrade fire: Workers lowered the teen down from the terrace

Heroic workers climbed to the 9th floor and helped a teenage girl down to a lower level

A fire broke out today at around 1 pm in a residential building in Belgrade's Dorcol neighborhood, in Visokog Stevana Street, in an apartment where a teenager was home alone at the time. The girl suffered burns and, as we learned, has been taken to the Emergency Center for resuscitation. According to information available to us, she was alone in the apartment on the 10th floor, while the fire was reportedly caused by a candle used during family patron saint feast (slava) ceremony, while the girl was taking a shower.

As the rescuers testified, she was screaming "I'm burning! I'm burning!" and smoke was coming out of her mouth as she tried to call for help and escape from the blaze that had engulfed the apartment. The girl was rescued by workers from a nearby construction site, with their heroic effort recorded by cameras.

As can be seen in one of the videos, the workers went to the 9th floor, to the terrace of the apartment below the one where the terrified girl was screaming.

As they told us, they entered the apartment building as a group.

"My colleagues called me, they said that an apartment was on fire, that a girl was on fire. We ran over there, first we tried to break down the door, but couldn't. The neighbor below let us in, we all went out to their terrace. She was shouting, 'I'm burning, I'm burning'. My people tied me, they held me. She was conscious, grabbed onto the fence a little, jumped a little. I caught her, then we lowered her onto the terrace," construction worker Pavle Gavura and his colleagues recounted the event.

As eyewitnesses from a group of workers told our reporter, the jacket that the unfortunate girl wore melted due to the force of the fire.

Three persons have been evacuated from the building, one of whom has been transported to the Emergency Center.

26 firefighters intervened at the site with six fire trucks.
