How two brothers drowned: Shocking scenes at lake near Lazarevac and possible cause of tragedy
Eyewitnesses say it was awful to watch it all
A great drama, and then a tragedy, happened yesterday shortly after 2 pm at Lake Ocaga near Lazarevac, where two brothers, D. M. (5) and D. M. (7) drowned.
The boys were pulled to the shore unconscious, and despite all the efforts of an ambulance crew to resuscitate them, which lasted more than an hour, the brothers unfortunately passed away.
According to the first, unofficial information, the brothers came to the lake yesterday with their parents and younger sister, a two-year-old baby, to sunbathe, swim and play at the lake. Another family, also with children, arrived with them.
No one suspected that a tragedy would take place.
"I saw the boys splashing in the shallows," a woman who was at the shore at the time told Novosti:
"The parents were also with them. After a while, I saw the parents still in the shallows with the baby, while the boys disappeared somewhere."
Their disappearance was first noticed by the mother, who started calling her sons. As they did not respond even after 15-20 minutes, the parents alerted the lifeguards. Our interlocutor continues:
"I saw that the lifeguards started looking for the boys along the coast, and in addition to the parents, some swimmers joined them. We called the boys by name, but there was no sign of them. Then the lifeguards entered the lake and dived..."
One of them brought ashore first the one, and very soon after that his colleague brought out the other of the children, who were non-swimmers. Also, the news spread that one of the brothers had epilepsy, and that he may have had a seizure when he entered the water, and, as it is suspected, pulled his brothe, who tried to help him, with him.
Both boys were unconscious when they were pulled out of the lake. Lifeguards tried to provide first aid on the spot, and the police and an ambulance were called.
"It was awful to watch all that! The mother was tearing her hair out, crying... the father too. For children to be drowning and for nobody to hear and see it, in front of the parents and at least a hundred people who were at the lake... Terrible," said the witnesses of the tragedy.
