Police are searching the Danube for missing passengers
A six-year-old girl is one of seven tourists from South Korea who died when a tourist boat collided with another boat in the Danube near the center of Budapest, while 21 people are missing.
Rescuers entered the water in front of the Hungarian parliament building after the Sirena ship collided with another tourist boat around 21.15 on Wednesday.
- A total of 33 South Korean citizens were aboard the ship, seven of them are dead - confirmed by Foreign Ministry of Seoul.
According to them, none of the passengers was wearing lifejackets. There were two crew members from Hungary on the tourist boat.
According to the Hungarian media, the oldest passenger on board was 71 years old.
The boat started filling with water when it capsized and sank while there was a strong storm in Budapest.
According to local media, the remains of the Siren ship were found in the riverbed after several hours of search near the Margaret Bridge, one of the main bridges connecting two parts of the Hungarian capital.
Heavy rains that have been falling in the city since the beginning of the month have led to a rise in water and high current levels, writes the Daily Mail.
- Our services recorded the deaths of seven people - said Pal Gyorfi, spokesperson for emergency services in Hungary.
He added that seven people were taken to hospital, they are in stable condition with hypothermia and symptoms of shock.
21 persons are missing and the police are searching the river through the entire length in Hungary, south of the place where the incident occurred.
Local media report that the water temperature is between 10 and 15 degrees.
